Jefferson 2-0 in region play
BY JUSTIN POOLE
The threat of storms could not deter the Jefferson Diamond Dragons this past Friday. Jefferson traveled to Social Circle and before the bad weather rolled in, had whipped them 13-0. The Dragons are looking to the next game for another win, when Jefferson hosts Athens Christian Thursday, March 20.
In an impressive 13-0 win ending after five innings, the Dragons scored their first region win of the season.According to coach Tommy Knight, the baseball team is playing much as he had hoped.
“The first part of the season we played some tough teams, Winder is undefeated, Oconee is good and Dublin is always good,” said Knight. “It was kind of the plan coming in so we could figure out what we had before we got into region, because all the teams will not be as tough as those we played earlier.”
At the plate Jefferson had 11 hits and according to Knight all the players were strong at bat.
Pitcher Chris Beck was on the mound for the majority of the game and only walked three batters and threw seven strikeouts. Cameron Blinn finished, pitching the fifth inning only allowing two hits.
Knight said, “[Beck] threw the ball really well, he didn’t give up a hit. Blinn came in and closed it out in the last inning.”
Since the Dragons have not established their third pitcher yet, Jefferson will come out Thursday against Athens Christian with Beck after starting Blinn in Tuesday’s game against Athens Academy.
“We are going to alternate these two guys, because we are still looking for our number three,” Knight said.
In Tuesday’s game against Athens Academy the Dragons proved strong on the mound and at the plate winning 6-2.
After a scoreless first inning, the Dragons scored three runs in the bottom of the second and then extended their lead by two more runs after the third. The Dragons maintained a lead over Athens Academy throughout the game.
Blinn pitched six innings and Chris Beck took the mound in the seventh to end the game. In the last moments of the game Beck had two balls, two strikes, and two outs on the board. The final pitch emptied the Dragons’ dugout as the team charged the field to celebrate. The victory over Athens Academy is Jefferson’s third win overall and is only the second region game.
Jefferson will need to remain strong at the plate when they face Athens Christian on Thursday, March 20 in another 8-A region game.
