Julian A. Cochran
Julian Addy Cochran, 78, of Homer, died Wednesday, December 26, 2001, at his residence following a short illness.
Born May 5, 1923, in Banks County, Mr. Cochran was a son of the late Matthew and Ella Ward Cochran.
He was a U.S. Air Force veteran, serving in World War II, and was retired from Wabco Air Brake Company, with 30 years of service. Mr. Cochran was a member of the AARP and a member of Damascus Baptist Church.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Friday, December 28, at Damascus Baptist Church with the Revs. Gene Todd and Roy Rogers officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Mr. Cochran is survived by his wife, Mildred Aaron Cochran, Homer; two sons, Phillip Cochran and James Cochran, both of Homer; two sisters, Imogene Cochran and Kelsey Hill, both of Athens; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to the Damascus Baptist Church Building Fund, 2826 GA Hwy. 198, Baldwin, GA 30511.

Roland W. Sinquefield
Roland Wendell Sinquefield, 58, of Maysville, died Sunday, December 23, 2001, at BJC Medical Center, Commerce.
Mr. Sinquefield was born April 18, 1943, in Edison. He was a son of the late Ronald B. and Lois Wilkerson Sinquefield.
Mr. Sinquefield was employed as a loan officer and vice president of Regions Bank in Homer and was a member of the First Baptist Church of Commerce, where he was an inactive deacon. He was also a member and past president of the Commerce Lions Club and a member of the Optimist Club.
Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, December 26, at the First Baptist Church of Commerce with the Revs. Kent Cranford and Donald Paulson officiating. Burial was in Jackson Memorial Gardens, Commerce.
Mr. Sinquefield is survived by his wife, Katie Burt Sinquefield, Maysville; son and daughter-in-law, Mike and Kristina Sinquefield, Acworth; daughter, Michelle Sinquefield, Madison; and sister, Ruby Hamilton, Dry Creek, La.

Jeanette Dial
Mrs. Jeanette Dial, 65, of Lula, died Saturday, December 29, 2001, at her residence following an extended illness.
Born in Carroll County, Mrs. Dial was a daughter of the late Walter M. (Red) Jiles and Mary Frances Ashmore Jiles.
She was a homemaker and was a member of Mount Sinai Congregational Holiness Church.
Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Monday, December 31, in the chapel of Memorial Park Funeral Home, Gainesville, with the Rev. Richard James officiating. Burial was in the Mount Sinai Congregational Holiness Church cemetery.
Mrs. Dial is survived by her husband, the Rev. Charles Dial, Lula; son, Tony Dial, Lula; sons and daughters-in-law, Alan and Amy Dial, Jefferson, and Terry and Diane Dial, Clermont; daughter and son-in-law, Lori and Chris Mizer, Gillsville; sisters and brothers-in-law, Joyce and Keneth Bradley, Bowdon, and Carol and Jimmy Smith, Wrightsville; brothers and sisters-in-law, Keneth and Sue Jiles, Whitesburg, Tommy and Elaine Jiles, Carrolton, and Randy and Gladys Jiles, Shannon; nine grandchildren, Tabitha, Brittany and Devon Dial, Britt and Charles Dial, Clay and Amelia Dial and Jeremy and Austin Mizer; and a number of nieces and nephews.

George A. Garrison
George Alvin Garrison, 73, of Alto, formerly of Gainesville, died Friday, December 28, 2001, at Lanier Park Hospital, Gainesville, following an extended illness.
Mr. Garrison was born in Banks County on April 23, 1928. He was a son of the late Turner N. Garrison and Tensie Sheridan Garrison.
Mr. Garrison attended Alto Congregational Holiness Church.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Roy Garrison and T.J. Garrison, and a sister, Jimmie Lou Crane.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, December 30, at Alto Congregational Holiness Church with the Revs. Leon Brown and Donald Wade officiating. Burial was in the Antioch Baptist Church cemetery, Lumpkin County.
Mr. Garrison is survived by a number of nieces and nephews.

Emily S. Cash
Mrs. Emily Stowe Cash, 78, of Carnesville, died Wednesday, December 26, 2001, at St. Josephıs Hospital, Atlanta, following a short illness.
Mrs. Cash was born in Stephens County on February 13, 1923. She was a daughter of the late Cross and Texanne Busha Stowe.
Mrs. Cash was retired from Ethicon Inc., with 14 years of service, and had worked as shift manager with Wendyıs at Banks Crossing in Commerce for the past several years. She was a member of Damascus Baptist Church.
Mrs. Cash was preceded in death by her husband, Nelson Cash.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, December 29, at Whitfield Funeral Home, South Chapel, Baldwin, with the Revs. Gene Todd and Roy Rogers officiating. Burial was in the Damascus Baptist Church cemetery.
Survivors include three daughters, Ann Cash Rooks, Flovilla, June Cash Collins, Cleveland, and Bonnie Cash Meeler, Maysville; one son, Nelson Loyd Cash Jr., Commerce; two brothers, Alfred Stowe, Toccoa, and M.C. Stowe, Eastanollee; eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

J.T. Baird
J.T. Baird, 94, of Commerce, died Monday, December 24, 2001, at BJC Medical Center, Commerce.
Mr. Baird was born in Stephens County on November 16, 1907. He was a son of the late Joe Ervin and Ida Cannon Baird.
Mr. Baird was retired from Gold Kist and was a member of the Nicholson Fire Baptized Holiness Church. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Evelyn Baird.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Thursday, December 27, in the chapel of Little-Ward Funeral Home, Commerce, with the Revs. Ellis Cooper and Carroll Griffin officiating. Burial was in Howington Cemetery, Nicholson.
Mr. Baird is survived by his wife, Naomi Phillips Baird, Commerce; two sons, Joe Baird, Commerce, and Phillip Baird, Jefferson; one daughter, Cheryl Franklin, Commerce; eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Dee W. Lord Jr.
Dee W. Lord Jr., 72, of Maysville, died Saturday, December 29, 2001, at Athens Regional Medical Center.
Mr. Lord was born May 8, 1925, in Banks County to the late Dee W Lord Sr. and Addie Jane Gee Lord.
He was retired from Stein Steel of Atlanta as a steel fabricator and was a member of Cave Springs Baptist Church. Mr. Lord was a U.S. Army veteran, having served in the Korean Conflict.
He was preceded in death by a son, David Lord.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, December 31, in the chapel of Ivie Funeral Home, Commerce, with the Rev. Charles Hardy officiating. Burial was in the Center Grove Baptist Church cemetery.
Mr. Lord is survived by his wife, Clarice Stowe Lord, Maysville; one son, Jeffery Alan Lord, Maysville; three daughters, Joyce Cooper, Pendergrass, Lisa Seagraves, Hull, and Tracy Maxwell, Nicholson; two brothers, Hugh Lee Lord, Hephzibah, and Worth Lord, Hoschton; two half-brothers, Charles Lord and Thurmond Lord, both of Augusta; one sister, Joyce Orr, Colorado Springs, Colo.; 16 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

William D. Wilson
William Darryl Wilson, 38, of Demorest, died Thursday, December 27, 2001, at Habersham County Medical Center following a short illness.
Mr. Wilson was born in Dekalb County on January 19, 1963. He was a graduate of Habersham Central High School and was a member of the Demorest Church of God.
Mr. Wilson was preceded in death by his grandparents, Monroe and Cleo Sinnemon and George C. and Hester Wilson, and his step-grandmother, Dorothy Wilson.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, December 30, at the Demorest Church of God with the Revs. W.B. Cox, Darvin Slaton and Roy Barnwell officiating. Burial was in Yonah Memorial Gardens with Dr. Kenneth Franklin officiating at graveside.

Billy P. Chitwood
Billy Paul Chitwood, 69, of Lula, died Sunday, December 30, 2001, at Northeast Georgia Medical Center, Gainesville.
Mr. Chitwood was the son of the late Luther and Onie Crenshaw Chitwood.
He was a retired counselor for Vocational Rehabilitation with the Department of Human Resources and was a U.S. Army veteran, serving in the military police. Mr. Chitwood was of the Baptist denomination.
Graveside services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, December 31, in the Mount Carmel Baptist Church cemetery with the Rev. Ralph O. Smith officiating.
Mr. Chitwood is survived by his wife, Barbara Stubbs Chitwood, Lula; daughters and sons-in-law, Jane and Vann Trotter, Anchorage, Alaska, and Paula and Allen Morris, Lula; granddaughter, Erin Morris, Lula; brothers, Charles Chitwood, Lithia Springs, and Ray Chitwood, Lula; and sister, Hazel Pair, Cumming.

Woodrow W. Gowder
Woodrow Wilson Gowder, 88, of Shannon, died Thursday, December 27, 2001, at a Rome hospital following a brief illness.
Mr. Gowder was born August 18, 1913, in Banks County, a son of the late John Gowder and Nellie Ward Gowder.
He had been a resident of Shannon since 1938. Mr. Gowder was retired from Brighton Mills, with 39 years of service. In earlier years, he played baseball as a pitcher for the Brighton Mills Textile Baseball Team. He had a life-long interest in baseball, said family members.
Mr. Gowder was a member and past master of Shannon Lodge #100, F&AM, the Scottish Rite Bodies, the York Rite Bodies and was a member of Yaarab Shrine. He was a member of the Floyd County Low 12 Club and the Shannon Chapter #368 Eastern Star. Mr. Gowder was a member of the First Baptist Church of Rome and the Scrap Iron Bible Class. He was also a member of AARP and the Model Farm Bureau and was the Banks County Sunday School Chairman for many years.
Mr. Gowder played Santa Claus at the Shannon Childrenıs Christmas party for over 20 years.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, December 29, at Heritage Chapel of Jennings Funeral Home, Rome, with Drs. Joel Snider and Floyd Roebuck officiating. Burial was in Sunset Hills Memorial Gardens Cemetery, with graveside rites provided by Shannon Lodge #100 F&AM. Craig Craver, Jim Bowling, Rick Stewart, Lane Tucker, Chris Gross and Trent Strickland served as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers were members of the Scrap Iron Bible Class and members of Shannon Lodge #100 F&AM.
Mr. Gowder is survived by his wife, Jewel Dailey Gowder, whom he married October 21, 1936; daughter, Mrs. Patricia Stewart, Canton; daughter and son-in-law, Joan and Mark Morris, Duluth; sisters, Lillie White, Gainesville, Janie OıKelley, Covington, Hazel Strickland, Maysville, and Sybil Stowe, Commerce; five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Mary H. Mealor, 81, of Commerce, died Sunday, December 30, 2001, at St. Maryıs Hospital, Athens, following a brief illness.
Mrs. Mealor was born December 12, 1920, in Hart County to the late Mr. and Mrs. C.C. McCollum.
She was a homemaker and was a member of Ridgeway Baptist Church, Maysville. Mrs. Mealor was preceded in death by her husband, Frank Eugene Mealor.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, January 2, 2002, at Ridgeway Baptist Church with the Revs. Bill Manus and Henry Webb officiating. Burial was in Jackson Memorial Gardens, Commerce.

James A. Bulla
James Andrew ³Jim² Bulla, 74, of Nicholson, died Tuesday, December 25, 2001, at BJC Medical Center, Commerce.
Born November 22, 1927, in Cumberland County, N.C., Mr. Bulla was a son of the late Daniel Jeff and Laura Lena Harris Bulla.
He was the former owner of Dixie Upholstery and was a member of the Nicholson Congregational Holiness Church. Mr. Bulla was a U.S. Navy veteran and coached youth baseball programs in Little, Pony and American Legion Leagues.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Thursday, December 27, at the Nicholson Congregational Holiness Church with the Revs. Howard Rhodes and Curtis Greene officiating. Burial was in the Nicholson Cemetery.
Survivors include his wife, Dot Palmer Bulla, Nicholson; two sons, Charlie Bulla, Bogart, and Kevin Tolbert, Perry; three sisters, Berline Bodenheimer, Parkton, N.C., Dorothy Strickland, Godwin, N.C., and Pauline Tillman, Fayetteville, N.C.; and four grandchildren.

Mamie I. Shackleford
Mrs. Mamie Inelle ³Nell² Cape Shackleford, 67, of Royston, died Wednesday, November 28, 2001, at Brown Convalescent Center, Royston.
Born May 1, 1934, in Franklin County, Mrs. Shackleford was a daughter of the late Tom and Bennie Hamilton Cape.
She was a homemaker and a member of Middle River Baptist Church. Mrs. Shackleford was preceded in death by her husband, Lonnie McGee Shackleford Jr., and a brother, Watson Cape.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Friday, November 30, in the B.D. Ginn Memorial Chapel of Ginn Funeral Home, Carnesville, with the Rev. Paul Jameson officiating. Burial was in the Middle River Baptist Church cemetery.
Survivors include one daughter, Doris Brawner, Royston; two sisters, Emily Eugenia Bruce and Nanette Holland, both of Carnesville; two grandchildren and one great-grandson.

Henry C. King
Henry C. King Jr., 74, of Cornelia, died Saturday, December 29, 2001, at Habersham County Medical Center following an extended illness.
Born in Lawrenceburg, Tenn., on August 13, 1927, Mr. King was a son of the late Henry Clay King Sr. and Thelma Bishop King.
He was a retired floor covering installer.
Mr. King was preceded in death by his wife, Selma Barrett King, a daughter, Patricia King, and a son, Bradley King. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Monday, December 31, at Whitfield Funeral Home, South Chapel, with the Rev. Darvin Slaton officiating. Burial was in Yonah Memorial Gardens.
Survivors include four daughters, Wanda Ayers, Conyers, Janice Morris, Lula, Diane Hogan, Baldwin, and Jackie Wallace, McDonough; three sons, Stanley King, Cumming, Greg King, Commerce, and Wesley King, Baldwin; 11 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Joseph H. Griffith
Joseph Hill Griffith, 40, of Atlanta, died Monday, December 24, 2001, at his residence.
Born in Dekalb County on May 7, 1961, Mr. Griffith was a son of the late S. Clarence Jr. and Christine McClure Griffith.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Friday, December 28, in the chapel of Little-Ward Funeral Home, Commerce, with the Rev. Bill Manus officiating. Burial was in Evergreen Memorial Park, Athens.
Mr. Griffith is survived by two brothers, Bobby Griffith, Jacksonville, Fla., and Sam Griffith, Milledegville; and his grandmother, Marsha Long, Athens.

John W. Fitzgerald
John W. ³Doug² Fitzgerald, 58, of Demorest, died Wednesday, December 26, 2001, at Habersham Home following an extended illness.
Born in Habersham County on May 13, 1943, Mr. Fitzgerald was the son of the late Julius and Bernice Free Fitzgerald.
He worked as a janitor at Piedmont College and was a member of Habersham Baptist Church. Mr. Fitzgerald was preceded in death by a brother, James Fitzgerald. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Thursday, December 27, in the chapel of McGahee-Griffin & Stewart Funeral Home, Cornelia, with the Revs. Donald Grizzle and George Dean officiating. Burial was in Habersham Cemetery.

Leon E. Christian
Leon Everett (Papa) Christian, 74, of Tucker, died Tuesday, December 18, 2001.
Born in Covington on June 18, 1927, Mr. Christian was the son of the late James Greer and Vannie Maxwell Christian.
He graduated from Rockdale High School and joined the Merchant Marines. Mr. Christian was preceded in death in 1996 by his wife of 50 years, Frances Juanita Callahan Christian, and two sons, Larry Phillip Christian and Randall Leon Christian.
He was a dearly beloved father, grandfather and great-grandfather, family members said.
Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Saturday, December 22, at Fairview Chapel of Horis A. Ward Funeral Home. Burial was in Fairview Memorial Gardens.
Survivors include one son, Curtis Lee Christian, Missouri; one daughter, Pat Sloan, Tucker; granddaughters and spouses, Julie Lynn Smith (Scott) Pringle, Jennifer Lee Smith (Hector) Castillo, Jeri Laine Smith (Laine) Felcan, Dawn Renee Christian (Billy) Alley, Carrie Jean Christian Shedd and Angela Marie Christian (Cameron) Pruitt; grandsons, Matthew Lee Christian, Randall Eugene Christian and Joseph Greer Christian; and 15 great-grandchildren.
